Court Rules in AAUP v Rubio: Trump Administration Violated First Amendment, September 30, 2025.
We are thrilled to announce that the AAUP has won a landmark ruling in a suit seeking to block the Trump administration from carrying out large-scale arrests, detentions, and deportations of noncitizen students and faculty members for ideological reasons (typically because of pro-Palestinian speech). In AAUP v. Rubio, a federal court today ruled that the Trump administration’s policy of arresting, detaining, and deporting noncitizen students and faculty members for their pro-Palestinian advocacy violates the First Amendment. You can read more about the case at the AAUP website here.
The UMN Twin Cities AAUP played a small role by joining an amicus brief in support of the plaintiff's request for a preliminary injunction in AAUP v. Rubio. You can find the brief on our chapter webpage here.
